We have received from the Music Pub lishing House of Wm. A'. Pond.& Co., 25 Union Square , New York, a song and quartette, entitled 'Garlands of Peace composed by John Loretz, Jr., with the words by Frank Myrtle. The song is a graceful, pleasing 6-8 movement in A minor, which, without change of time, modulates into A major in the quartette The words are very happily chosen, and thej music is only of moderate difficulty, and- with well trained voices would pro duce a fine effect. It is intended to form a part cf 'Memorial Day' exercises, for which it is very appropriate. The piece, in our, judgment, from a hasty glance, has real merit, is sweetly pathetic, and is infi niieij superior to ine xnousana ana one pieces of musical trash with which the countiy is flooded. The words of the sods will: appear on the third page ot the Ke ViKW tc-morrow. Rendy mixed Paints, strictly ure Whit Lead, Cclors, Brushes, W ndow Glass, fcc.J at Jacobi's. . . Questions to Do Answered. The time 1 is drawing hear when the census taker will enter upon his. duties, and in order to expedite business it would be well for all persons to prepare them selves to answer all questions promptly. Tne following statement in regard to ag riculture will be found of interest: The census taker will want to know from each farmer the numb er of acres of land plant ed and the amount raised in 1879, of wheat, corn, rye, oats, barley, buck wbeax, peas and beans, nee, tobicco, cot ton, 'potatoes, orchards, vineyards, small fruit, hay, clover seed, grass seed, hops, hemp, flax seed, bees and honey, ugar cane and sorghnm. " Speculations, in the different news papers throughout the State, relative to th9 prospects of a good fruit crop this seasonare fearfully at variance. Ihey are about equally divided,, onevhalf claim ing that we shall have an abundant crop, while the other half positively declares that the fruit is 'kilt entirely,' and that nary' a peach, apple or plum will we have with which to regale our editorial appetite during the year. The Infantlclcla Case. We have been unable to obtain the of icial report of the findings of the Jury of inquest held over the body of the infant, in the case of supposed infanticide men tioned by us yesterday, but we learn that it is substantially, that the child came to its death through the willful and intenv tional .neglect of its mother, Susan Wad dell. The unnatural mother has been committed to jail, without the benefit of bail, to await the action of the grand jury in the matter. .' The Alarm This Forenoon- The alarm of fire this forenoon was caused by the ignition of the roof of an old house just in the rear of the Fibre Works, and owned by Mr. Francis Mor ris, of New York. It caught from a spark from the chimney. As soon as the alarm was given the works at Messrs, Kidder & Sons' mills were stopped and about fifty haBds,'armed with buckets fall of water soon drenched the roof and put out the fire. The services of the fire department were not needed. The damage to the building was very slight. Tne Greenville and Columbia Rail road. We spoke yesterday of the bidding in Columbia at the sale of the Greenville & Columbia R. R., but could not give the final result, which we did not learn until after our paper was in press. It was sold to Mr. W. A. Courtenay, of Charleston, for $2,963,400, and this was in accord ance with our premises, that the people of that city could not afford to allow this road to pass into the hands of partief in other States. It is said here, how ever, that Mr. Courtenay purchased for Mr. t W. P. Clyde, of New York, although this may be based upon the meae I fact that Mr. Courtenay is an agent in Charleston forjthe Clyde line of steamers. At all events the road will hereafter, undoubtedly, be controlled in the interest of Charleston. i We began business for lha Agricul Ural-Insurance Company of New York, on the first day of March, 1880. By the fire wbioh occurred on tie morning of April 2nd we unfortunately met with losses Jor this Company, on the property of Mr. John R. Melton and Mrs. Octavia Dudley, amounting to six hundred and thirty dollars ($630) which have already teen paid in full, on receipt of proof, without discount. The Agricul tural has been doing business 27 years and possesses cash assets to the amount of one million, one hundred and thirty seven thousand dollars. It insures nothing but private residences and farm property, and offers special inducements lor that class of risks. Its policies insure against, loss or damage by lightning, vhtthir f c cri mes or net, and without extra charge Active agents wanted. J no. W. Gordon & Bko. . Grateful Women. None receive so much benefit, and none are so profoundly grateful and show such an interest in recommending Hop Bitters as women. It is the only remedy peculiarly adapted to the many ills the sex is most universally subject to. Chills and fever, indigestion or deranged liver, constant orjperiodical sick headaches, weakness in the back or kidneys, pain in the shoulders and different parts of the body, a feeling of lassitude and despon dency, are all readily removed by these Bitters.
